简介
神话考究
是新约中基督耶稣有提到的鬼王，所以在撒旦名号的争夺战之中也有很高的声望。恶魔学将他定位成地狱的宰相，也有著作中以别西卜为地狱的帝王，设定撒旦只是来到地狱的"野党首领"，希望寻求别西卜的合作对抗天庭。所罗门的著作中乃刻划成巨大的小牛或长尾巴的公羊，另外最有名的形态就是巨大的苍蝇。 所以也被称作“苍蝇王”。《失乐园》将其描绘成深思熟虑、外貌威严的贤者，在堕天者中仅次于路西法好姬友。在巴勒斯坦的名气仅次于路西法，民间就将他和撒旦及路西法常视为同一人。
1589年Peter Binsfeld把七宗罪与恶魔联系在一起，认为代表各种罪行的恶魔会引诱拥有相同罪行的人。其中别西卜对应的是暴食(Gluttony)。
