原曲是《八小时之歌》（《Eight hours》），1886年5月1日开始的争取八小时工作制美国工人运动中最出名的歌曲，五一国际劳动节就是为了纪念这次斗争而由第二国际设立。[1]
原曲由I.G.布兰查德（I.G. Blanchard）作词，牧师杰西·琼斯（Rev. Jesse H. Jones）作曲[2]，最初以诗的形式刊出于1878年7月21日的《工人旗帜报》，谱曲后发表于1886年8月18日的《工人鼓吹者报》。歌曲内容积极进取，但也表现了对暴力革命的错误认识和信仰天主的思想。[1]
